What makes us unique

A historic building

Photograph of a Buttermarket stained glass windowThere has been commercial trading since 1798 when The Buttermarket site behind the Town Hall was used as Newark's meat market.

To really appreciate The Buttermarket it is useful to know it's history. In the late 1980's Newark Town Council was looking at ways to refurbish the late 1770's, Grade 1 listed Town Hall after years of disrepair and unsympathetic decoration. In 1988 developers Lovell Enterprise bought the Victorian Market Hall (known locally as the “indoor market”) and leased the ground floor of the Town Hall to construct one space - a new indoor shopping centre.
