The Buttermarket Shopping Centre

The Buttermarket is Newark-on-Trent's only indoor shopping centre and you'll find us in the heart of the town.

Converted into a modern shopping centre in 1990 The Buttermarket has a diverse range of quality charming, independent outlets and well known retail names. We're open six days a week, the centre has, as well as popular retail outlets, hair salon, café & fancy dress hire store.

Our historic building, which in some parts dates back to 1776, is accessible from the cobbled market place beneath the Georgian Town Hall, with other entrances on Middlegate and Chain Lane.

We have 28 different individual units over two floors, plus barrows that are used throughout the year plus a first floor café. The Buttermarket has a rich variety of stores and services.

What makes us unique?

There has been commercial trading since at least 1798 when this area behind the Town Hall was used as Newark's meat market or butchery shambles.
